When referring to grilled fish, connoisseurs cannot skip La Vong grilled fish with about 150 historical years in the capital of Vietnam or called Hanoian specialty.
The origin of this dish is from the French colonial times. Doan family, lived at 14 Hang Son Street, made the fish dish for the resistance military at that time. After that, the family not only specialized in sale of the grilled fish dish to earn their living, but also support the army. Gradually, Hang Son Street is called Cha Ca Street although there is only one restaurant selling fish pie. Because in front of the restaurant’s gate had the sculpture of “La Vong”, the patrons named it “Cha ca La Vong”.
After the grilled fish is almost cooked, food is displayed on the table with a clay brazier and a hot pot. In fact, foreigners even Vietnamese people enjoying Cha ca at the first time have to ask how this dish is tasted. When Cha ca is put into the heating pan then gets golden brown, add into your bowl some vermicelli, peanuts, conriander, sauces and savour the delicate aroma between mouthfuls of La Vong grilled fish. If guests enjoy this fish dish without any ingredients, it can be a pity.
In short, Cha ca La Vong is one of the Hanoian well-known cuisine that domestic and international visitors must try.
