Overall, the majority of the population stated that it is very important to visit green spaces and the most common green areas visited from 2009/10 to 2010/11 were the countryside and green spaces in the town or city. In regards to the importance of green space to people in England, almost three quarters of the population found them very important followed by 21% who thought it was fairly important. Conversely, a minority said it was not very important (4%) or not important at all (1%). The number of people visiting a natural environment in 2009/10 and 2010/11 reached 2. 49 billion. Most of them went to the countryside (53%) and the green spaces in town or city (37%). However, seaside resorts or towns and other seaside coastline spots welcomed a significant number of visitors too (7% and 4% respectively).
