The line graph illustrates the change in the volume of goods transported by the four main modes of transport in the UK during the period 1974 to 2002.
Overall, almost the amount of goods transported by all forms has increased. However, only rail transport is almost unchanged despite experiencing quite a lot of fluctuations.
Road transport has always taken the lead, both at the beginning and at the end of the period, with 70 million tons in 1974 and almost 99 million tons in 2002 respectively. Goods transported by waterway also accounted for the majority, maked up for approximately 39 million tons in 1974. This number increased slightly until 1978, then it suddenly climbed, to about 57 million tons and remained at that level until 1994. In the period 1994-1998, the volume of products transported by this modes decreased slightly, but then quickly broke through, reaching about 65 million in 2002.
Meanwhile, transportation by rail is not very popular. Starting with 40 million tons, the total cargo volume fell to almost 27 million tons in 1995. It then turned the tide, increasing dramatically and surpassing the original position slightly, accounting for about 42 million tons. Pipeline shipping is seeing an amazing upward trend. From the initial meager 5 million tons, the volume of goods transported has climbed to nearly 22 million. However, pipeline transportation still ranks at the bottom of the chart.
