The graph gives data on the amounts of items carried in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four various means of transport.
Overall, goods transported by road accounted for maximum proportion, whereas the minimum quantity was observed by pipeline over a 28 years period.
In detail, the amount of goods carried by road made up 70 million tonnes at the beginning, then this figure fluctuated slightly over the years from 1974 to 1994, standing at 80 million tonnes and rose remarkably to approximately 100 million tonnes in 2002. However this indicator for goods carried by water and rail maintained the same level in 1974 and became 40 million tonnes. Afterwards, this jndicator by water rose to 58 million tonnes in 1982 and remained static until 1994. Over a 8 years period this segment only showed a 4 million tonnes increase, however, there was a moderate fluctuation in the number of goods carried by rail and this figure reached to 25 million tonnes in 1994, then was equal to the same amount as it was at the beginning. The quantity of goods transported by pipeline showed a downward trend. At the beginning this segment stood at only 5 million tonnes, afterwards went up to approximately 20 million tonnes throughout the time period.
