Overall, both birth and death rates have increased over the time period. The death rate has increased consistently and is expected to drop slightly towards 2101. Meanwhile, the birthrate has fluctuated but declined steadily since 1991. New Zealand recorded 20 births per 1000 in 1901. The rate fluctuated but increased steadily, reaching its peak of almost 70 births in the 1960s. The birth rate fluctuated by declining to 50 in 1981 before climbing to 60 towards 2001. Thereafter the rate steadily declined and is projected to decline to 45 births by 2101. The death rate in New Zealand has maintained an increasing trend overall. In the beginning, there were only 8.
