In general, the town, which was originally a rural area, was transformed into an urban one with the addition of a residential area and the construction of new facilities. In 1936, the town was relatively sparse in terms of buildings. In particular, the northern area contained nothing but some trees and along the river with no sign of houses. Most of the buildings were located in the central zone, all of which were either minor retailers or basic commodities. As for the southern area, there was a large piece of agricultural land and government workplaces adjacent to it, as well as a path exclusive to cycling in the southeast. However, after the reform taking place in 2007, many parts of the town witnessed significant changes. For instance, the empty field in the northwest was filled with developed accommodations, while the amount of plantation opposite to the aforesaid area was considerably cut down. Meanwhile, small shops in the central zone moved away, making way for a supermarket, a travel agency, and a department store situated right in the heart of Harborne. Finally, regarding the southern area, farming land, government offices, and cycle path were replaced with a golf course, a museum, and a road respectively.
