The diagram depicts the several stages of development in a salmon’s life cycle. R2lDP
The diagram depicts the several stages of development in a salmon’s life cycle. At the beginning of the stage, eggs hatch approximately three months in fresh water. Hatched eggs are called Alevin - babies but not like a fish yet – that feeds on yolk-sac. A few weeks later, they take the form of a young fish, which is identified as Fry, and swims continuously. Fry is about five to ten weeks old. Then, a few months later, they are known as Parr which develops the ‘finger’ markings. At some point between one to three years old, they are named Smolt, groups with others and heads out to the ocean. For a salmon to be identified as adult, they had to spend a mere one to eight years at the ocean in order to be fully grown. After which adult salmon heads out to the ocean, they stay there until the time for spawning. Ultimately, the spawning adult then dies within two weeks after spawning and returns to the fresh water. Overall, the salmon life cycle covers seven different stages of approximately over eight years from egg hatching till death.
