The given charts illustrate growth in population density in some of the largest cities in the world. At a glance, it is clearly visible that the population has increased exponentially from after 1990 in urban areas; in comparison to rural areas.
Graph number one depicts the population with respect to different major cities; moreover, the population is divided into a span of two decades right from 1970 to 2010. Firstly, Tokyo has shown a steady upward trend in population over the given span and in fact, the population in Tokyo was most in all the phases; on the other hand, New York has shown the least overall growth in comparison to other given cities. Bombay and Jakarta have shown similar trends, where both the cities at first were having a low population in 1970 and positive growth was seen in 1990; but after 1990, population witnessed exponential growth, unlike others. Lastly, Shanghai had a good population in 1970 but growth till 1990 was mediocre. After 1990, Shanghai saw a healthy positive trend in population as shown.
The second graph demonstrates the population over the years in rural and urban areas. At a sight, one can clearly understand that population in urban areas boomed well after 1990 moreover, after 2000 it showed a great positive trend. On the other hand, rural areas had more population till 1990, but after 1990 growth in rural areas was not as good as rural areas. And after 2000, the population started a downward trend in rural areas due to the rise of population in urban areas because of possible migrations.
