In general, from 1918 to 1961, the percentage of households in rented accommodation was higher than that of those owning their own house, while the figure for people renting accommodation witnessed an opposite trend between 1981 and 2011. Looking at the chart in more detail, in 1918, just over 76 percent of households were rented, three times the number of owners. This figure fell significantly to 50 percent in 1971, despite a period of stability between 1939 and 1953. Conversely, the proportion of households in owned accommodation more than doubled, reaching a little less than 25 percent in 1918, remaining stable around 30 percent from 1939 to 1953 before rising to an equal level to those in rented accommodation. Between 1981 and 2001, the proportion of households owning a home continued its upward trend until it reached a peak of nearly 70% then fell by 5% in 2011. The proportion of tenants experienced a different trend, with figures fighting to just over 30 % in 2001, followed by a slight increase of 5%.
