The bar chart demonstrates the number of elephants in Asia during the period from 1997 to 2004. Overall, as can be seen from the chart, there was an increase in the estimated maximum population of elephants in Cambodia, while the opposite was true for that of Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China. It is notable that the number of elephants in India was highest compared to the lowest in China. As can be seen from the chart, the figure for elephants in India was highest at nearly 1000 in 1997 and then decreased to 7500 in 2004. Standing at 5500, the number of elephants in Myanmar was second and declined to 5000, similar to that of Sri Lanka. The number of elephants in Thailand and Malaysia had the same trend that there was a significant decrease by 2004. The population of elephants in Vietnam and Laos was about 1200 for two years, while that of China was lowest with approximately 700 for 2 years. In contrast, the number of elephants in Cambodia witnessed a slight decline from 1700 to 1800.
