Many older building these days are protected by law under the name of Nation’s history. Some people are of the opinion that these should be knocked down and replaced with new ones. Older buildings provide a gateway to learn about architecture of olden days. They help younger generation learn and understand about history of the place. They can also serve as tourist attractions and generate revenue. Many older buildings are generally viewed as National Heritage sites and help put a place on map. However, it is important that correct procedures should be followed while determining that building is in fact a national heritage and can contribute to nation’s history. Apart from this, the structural soundness of such places should also be taken into account. Looking after older building can also generate employment in terms of security, cleaning staff etc. Undertaking progress by constructing new buildings need not necessarily happen at the cost of ripping down the walls of history. New buildings can be erected at different sites that can serve as new landmark and help propel the place further in terms of infrastructure while also preserving historical sites. To some extent, constructing a new building at a clear site is far easier and more cost effective than having to demolish the older structures. Though it is important to have newer buildings, that depict progress, it is equally important to preserve old landmarks. But thorough due diligence must be followed before deciding on demolishing old buildings. Instead of knocking down such places, renovation and restoration works can also be taken up.
