Students who are not native English speakers are required to have enough score on an English test, such as TOEFL in order to be accepted into a British university. The abolishment of this criteria, however, has recently become a hot public discussion. People in favor of the abolishment of the criteria may have some reasonable excuses, however, I strongly believe that British universities should not revoke the minimum language criteria for foreign students for several reasons.
First of all, the minimum language criteria is essential because without it, students with low level of English enrolled in a university are likely to encounter many difficulties. For example, these students will have communication problems with their teachers and peers. Another difficulty for them will be the hardship of following the lesson and participation in it. And this situation will hinder them to comprehend the lessons. Since they can’t learn the necessary information of the lessons, they naturally will have problems about preparing assignments and doing projects as well.
In addition to these problems students may have, the universities will also face some handicaps if they accept students without minimum language abilities. The most important problem will be the drop in the education quality of the respective universities. This, in turn, will cause the loss of reputation for them. Moreover, they will have administrative burden for reviewing the student applications and need for extra-staff to handle this problem. It will cost them considerable amount of money.
In conclusion, the abolishment of the minimum language criteria for entering the university will cause problems for not only students but also for the universities. If evaluated thoroughly, it can be seen that the language criteria is essential for the continuation and well-being of the high level education system. That’s why, I am extremely against the abolishment of the necessary minimum language criteria for entering universities. I hope this unnecessary abolishment discussion will fade away and we will be able to use our minds and efforts for better discussions.
