The bar chart depicts how people aged from 25 to 34 are housed in the UK over 10 years starting in 2004. Overall, renters and homeowners showed opposite trends with a sharp increase in renters percentages and a reciprocal decline in ownership. By the end of the period, overall occupant had overtaken ownership by a wide margin. In 2004, renters stood at around 20% compared with homeowners, which were at nearly 58%. From that point there was a steady rise in renters and decline in owners. Owners reached 55% in 2006 and climbed slowly to 56% before falling to 52% in 2009. Renters rose approximately to 23% in 2005, remained there in 2006 before dramatically increasing to 31% in 2009. This trend continued for both percentages with a held steady from 2011 to 2012. Renters went up to 35%, 41% and 44% in 2010, 2011 and 2013, respectively. Likewise, owners decreased substantially to 45%, 42% and 40% in the same years. At the end of the period, owners dipped to just over 55% and renters rose to nearly 58%.
