The line graph compares average yearly spending by Americans on smartphones and traditional phones between 2000 and 2009. It is clear that spending on traditional phones fell steadily over the 10-year period, while smartphone expenditure rose quickly. The year 2005 marks the point at which expenditure on smartphones overtook that for traditional phones. In 2000, US consumers spent an average of nearly $700 on mobile phones, compared to only around $200 on smartphones. Over the following five years, average yearly spending on traditional phones dropped steadily by nearly $200. By contrast, expenditure on smartphones rose quickly by approximately $300.
