In the United Kingdom, it might be complicated to define identity regarding the government and citizenship. Is nationalism a feeling we can obtain? Also, knowing the term "Britishness" stands for what and how do the local citizens feel about being British? The purpose of this report is to show some aspects of being British and the people's perspective about it. Some differences will be described between Civic and Ethnic identity as well in the beginning and the fundamental beliefs, later on, this report will clarify the meaning of Britishness according to the government and the people. The national identity: Civic and Ethnic are two essential concepts of national identity. At first, the Civic conception basically is something a person can acquire. For example, the ability for speaking English, respecting the law as well as being a citizen in the United Kingdom (NatCen Social Research, 2013). Another factor to consider is the Ethnic identity. Ethnic identity is something we can't alter. For instance, to have been living there and born in it, the religious belief. The majority of people believe that speaking English plays an important part in the national identity (NatCen Social Research, 2013). This means that Civic is more vital than ethnic identity. Therefore, it can be seen that the Civic and Ethnic identity play an important part in making people who are they now. Britishness according to the UK government and its people: The United Kingdom has several countries united with each other and there is a difference between The United Kingdom and Great Britain. Democracy plays an important job in ruling a country and there are basic values that the British citizens respect. Firstly, according to the Home Office (2021), the United Kingdom is a compilation of 4 countries which are: England, Scotland, wales along with Northern Ireland. However, "Great Britain" refers to England, Wales and Northern Ireland without Scotland. Furthermore, the system in the UK is a parliamentary democracy which is the people can vote for a member of parliaments. Yet, there are no gender rules in the elections unlike in other countries (What does it mean to be British, 2015). Moreover, if you want to be a British citizen, you should obey the role of the law. According to the Home office (2021) states that a person has the responsibility to take care of themselves and to tolerate other people including freedom of speech and religion. This may be because of the relationship between the government and the people. It can be clearly seen that the United Kingdom has fundamental values and the people respect them. This report has shown a number of important points to identify the national identity. It can be seen from the information above there are some differences between Civic and Ethnic identity, the association among the British authority and the residents.
