The passage and the lecturer both discuss " Quackers" which was a sound that heard by the Russian navy. The author in the article believes in three hypotheses which were possible sources of this sound. However, the professor refutes each of them with her reasons. I am going to mention both sides' viewpoints bellow.
First, the passage claims that this sound came from a type of whales when the male wanted to attract females during a courtship ritual. The professor can not accept this reason because she thinks it could not be the sound from whales since whales live near the surface of the water and the sounds came from deep of the ocean. She adds that if they were whales the Russian submarine should be able to detect it on sonar but as we know they could not do it.
Secondly, the author of the passage holds an opinion that it is possible this sound came from another animal, giant squid. This animal lives in the deep altitude of the ocean and was known as fish predator. Nevertheless, the lecturer has the opposite opinion, she states that this animal could not be the sound's source because the sounds were heard several times in the past but not today. However this particular animal is living in that area these days, so if we want to consider the squid as a sound's core, we must be able to hear that sound now but we do not.
Finally, the passage says that it was possible that those days some other country sent their submarine to roam in that zone and that sounds came from that unintentionally. The woman in the lecturer highlights the fact that that thing moved so quickly and changed it's position swiftly, according to the fact that in those times there was not enough technology to build such device with that speed to change direction or the engine worked in a silence which made it unnoticeable. in addition, she mentions that it is not feasible that they have this ability to run away from sonar since it needed great progress in marine science technology.
