There are a multitude of ways to earn a living, whether it be a regular job, a business or freelancing. Just as there are two sides of every coin, there are advantages and disadvantages of each of the ways of earning. Most commonly, people choose a job or sometimes, the courageous ones decide to start their own business. But what is the fundamental difference between the ideologies of these two types of people?
For most part of history since industrialisation, getting employed and doing a regular job has been the safest way to ensure one’s survival. The appeal to work for a firm on a fixed salary lies in its stability and predictability. While this remains a reasonable choice for most of the people, there has been a recent growth in the observed number of start-ups as well as that of self-employed individuals. This change can be attributed to many factors that drive the market and industrial trends, but one of the biggest contributors is the newly found preference to freedom and the desire to work on one’s own terms. There are risks in being self-employed or starting a new business, namely, the uncertainty due to the lack of a stable income, but in the eyes of a lot of people, the potential of these ventures outweighs the risks by a large enough margin so as to encourage them to take those risks.
A lot of good examples come to mind when one thinks in terms of working for someone else versus working for oneself, i. e. , business. There are several well known entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Ratan Tata, who left their jobs at some point and took the financial risk to start their own companies. Even the not-so-popular businessmen experience greater satisfaction with their career due to the sense of freedom and achievement that comes with working for oneself.
