Tourism generates a significant amount of income for many countries. However, some people are worried that this industry damages the environment and increases crime in the regions that host tourists. In order to ensure that tourism continues to be enjoyable for visitors, governments, businesses, and individuals must cooperate to address the problems. Tourism can damage the environment because many new buildings are usually erected and this might lead to the loss of green space. As a result, less carbon dioxide may be absorbed and this can worsen global warming, not to mention increase the pollution in the air. Another downside is that tourism can lead to higher levels of crime such as theft and fraud because tourists are usually not familiar with their new surroundings and are busy focusing on looking at attractions or maybe a street map. Areas that host tourists may also witness more prostitution as well as sales of drugs. Obviously, these crimes may make an area less attractive to many tourists and lower the quality of life for residents. To solve these problems, governments ought to use revenue from tourism to invest in ways to improve the environment. For example, they can research ways to erect buildings and facilities using environmentally-friendly materials and techniques. Meanwhile, they could use tourist income to responsibly relocate animals that may be displaced. A further solution might be to implement laws that require developers to follow strict guidelines that protect the environment. Regarding crime, citizens who report criminal activity should be properly rewarded by governments. Also, visitors need to be warned about high-crime areas by signs. In sum, traveling is a popular hobby for many people, but the problems can have a lasting effect on places that host visitors. If governments and citizens hope to reap the greatest benefits from tourism, then it will be necessary to reduce the problems.
