The bar chart and line graph describe the number of university students/ undergrads in the UK and government expenditure on each student between 1991 and 2001. The pie chart illustrates the percentage of students of three kinds of family economic background in 1991. It is clear that the number of students increased gradually, while the reverse was true for government funding. The majority of the undergraduates were from middle-income families. The number of students Started at 1. 1 million in 1991 and then rosing significantly to 1. 5 million in 1993 and 1. 7 million in 1995. This figure went up slightly to 1. 8 million in 1997, before peaking at 2. 2 million in the next two years. By contrast, there was a minimal drop to 2 million in the final year. While government expenditure on each student witnessed the opposite trend with a sharp decrease from 6, 500 pounds in 1991 to about 4, 700 pounds after five years. After that, the amount of money spent by the UK government on each student remained stable at 4, 700 pounds until the end of the period. The proportion of undergraduates coming from middle-income families accounted for over 60%, which was double that of students from high-income families. At the same time, the figure for low-income families made up at only 8%.
