The first step is to form a high-level reservoir at the end of a river by establishing a tall dam to restore the water. Additionally, there is an intake at the bottom of the dam. During in the daytime, the intake will be opened in order to allow a part of water in the reservoir to fall down to the power station. In the following step, the reversible turbines of the power station will be rotated by the water flow, operating the generator to produce electricity which is delivered to the National grid through the long distant power lines. The water flowing into the power station eventually is poured into a low-level reservoir. To the contrast, this water will be repumped into the high-level reservoir at night when the intake is closed for accumulating the water until next day.
